Q: What are the competition rules for entering the Living Australian Online Photography Competition?
A: Please see Competition Rules. This is the place where you really need to start when considering if and how to enter.
There are three main reasons for this:

Q: Who is running the Living Australian Online Photography Competition?
A: The Australia Day Council of NSW (ADCNSW)
Q: Why is the Living Australian Online Photography Competition being run?
A: The competition has been developed under the banner of the ADCNSW’s Australian Identity & Culture campaign. It is a great initiative for people to get involved in and contribute to our larger sense of national identity, by photographing a moment that screams ‘Australian’ to them. It’s an opportunity for proud Aussies to get creative with their camera and showcase their vision/s of the theme Make Your Mark Australia.
Q: How will the theme Make Your Mark Australia be explored in this photography competition?
A: It is an opportunity for Australians to celebrate and reflect on the many varied and valuable Australian contributions that have inspired them every day - locally, nationally and internationally.
Q: How many categories in the competition?
A: There are four theme categories into which images may be entered to represent how you are Living Australian and ultimately reflecting the overall theme ‘Make Your Mark Australia’
- Local
- Global
- Humour
- Lifestyle
Q: Who may take part in the Living Australian Online Photography Competition?
A: All proud Aussies are welcome to take part. The Competition is open to all Australian citizens, whether living in Australia or abroad. Foreign citizens living in Australia on long-term visas (such as residency, work, student visa) are eligible to enter. People living in Australia on short-term/tourist visas are ineligible to enter.
There are two divisions for entries:

Open - Anyone can enter this category whether you’re a professional photographer, studying photography or just someone who is interested in the competition. It is not restricted to any age groups
Prize - $4,000 and image featured on an Australia Post Stamp

Junior - People aged under 18 years. Encouraging all Australian primary and secondary school students to participate (people aged under 18 years will need to gain the consent of their parent/guardian).
Prize - $1,000 and a Canon EOS 600D DSLR camera
Q: How can I enter the Living Australian Online Photography Competition?
A: Firstly, you will need to be a registered user of www.AUSSIEVAULT.com.au with a valid password and login combination to upload an image. You will need to read and accept the Competition Rules, complete the entry form, attach your image and submit. You will be asked to confirm or change your submission – once satisfied, please submit your image for approval.

Q: I am under 18, can I enter?
A: Yes, provided you check with a parent/guardian to ensure that they consent to you uploading any images. Your parent/ guardian will also need to accept the prize, however, expenses associated with acceptance of the prize itself will not be covered for the parent/guardian.
We encourage all persons under 18 years entering either the Open or Junior division to read the Competition Rules with a parent/guardian.
Q: I am under 18, do I have to enter the Junior Division?
A: No, people under the age are able to enter the Open division.
Q: I am a professional photographer - can I enter?
A: Yes, the competition is open to all Australian citizens and we welcome professional and amateur photographers to participate.
Q: How will the Open division finalists be selected?
A: A judging panel formed at ADCNSW’s discretion in conjunction with Australia Post will judge the entries and select up to 20 Competition finalists between the 6 December and 15 December 2011. Entries will be individually judged on the photograph’s ability to reflect the theme ‘Make Your Mark Australia’ in ways which:
- are creative
- are innovative
- demonstrate artistic merit (including image composition, treatment of light and shade, subject treatment)
- represent the category in which you are entered (Local, Global, Humour, Lifestyle)
- are suitable for reproduction on a postage stamp for the Open Division

Q: How will the Junior division finalists be selected?
A: A judging panel formed at ADCNSW’s discretion will judge the entries and select up to 20 Competition finalists between the 6 December and 15 December 2011. Entries will be individually judged on the photograph’s ability to reflect the theme ‘Make Your Mark Australia’ in ways which:
- are creative
- are innovative
- demonstrate artistic merit (including image composition, treatment of light and shade, subject treatment)
- represent the category in which you are entered (Local, Global, Humour, Lifestyle)
- are suitable for reproduction in a calendar
Up to 20 Finalists in each division (Open & Junior) will be highlighted on www.AUSSIEVAULT.com.au in the Finalist section.
Q: If I'm featured on the website as a finalist does that mean I'm eligible for the Prize?
A: Yes. Finalists eligible for the Prize will also be announced on www.AUSSIEVAULT.com.au on 15 December 2011. Finalists will also receive a confirmation email.
Q: How will the winner be selected?
A: The finalist entries will be judged by a creative judging panel invited by the ADCNSW. You can view the judging panel at Judges and Prizes
Q: What ways can the public participate in this competition?
A: Public can enter the competition by submitting images based on the criteria as well as being able to view and comment on the various images.
Q: Is there public voting?
A: There is no public voting. Finalists and winners will be selected by ADCNSW, Australia Post and the help of the judging panel.
Q: What will the winner be awarded?
A: There will be two prize levels.
1. Open - The one image chosen by the judges will receive:
- $4,000 in cash
- Image on an Australia Post Stamp for release mid-2012
2. Junior - The one image chosen by the judges will receive:
- $1,000 in cash
- Canon EOS 600D DSLR Camera
Images will also be used to promote Australia Day through the websites, newsletters, media outlets, social media networks and other forms of marketing.
Q: Will late entries be accepted?
A: In order to be eligible for the prize the ADCNSW will not be accepting any entries after 6 December 2011 for the competition. Please refer to Competition Rules.
Q: How many times can I enter?
A: Multiple entries are permitted
- Up to 10 different images can be submitted per person
- One theme category can be selected per image
- One division can be selected per image
- People aged under 18 years may also enter the Open division
- If people enter both divisions or more than one theme category, the images need to be different
Q: Can I submit images previously submitted for the Competition in 2009/2010/2011?
A: In order to be eligible for the prize the images submitted need to be different from images submitted for the previous Living Australian competitions and need to best reflect the competition categories and theme.
Q: When uploading an image, is the description section mandatory?
A: Yes. You will be required to provide a description of how your image depicts Living Australian in 200 words or less to qualify for the competition; the Finalists will also be judged on the description they submit and how it relates to the image.
Q: May I upload portrait or landscape images?
A: Images in either portrait or landscape view may be uploaded. Please make sure that your image has been saved correctly without the need to rotate to view it.
Q: What size and resolution do the images need to be?
A: In order to be eligible for the prize, images should be supplied as high-resolution JPEGs measuring at least 3,000 pixels on the longest side or a minimum size of A4 at 300dpi.
We recommend using a camera with a minimum of 6 Megapixels.
Files should range from minimum file size 500KB to a maximum 8MB to facilitate easy uploading.
Q: Will my entry be valid if I use image editing software on my image?
A: Yes, entries submitted after using image editing software will be valid as long as the image meets the criteria. Remember less is more and it is about capturing the competition theme.
Q: What happens to the images once they have been entered? Does the ADCNSW own the rights to the images?
A: No, but once you accept the Competition Rules, ADCNSW will have the license to use your images for the Living Australian Photography Competition and the promotion of all Australia Day related activities and programs. Australia Day sponsors and supporters will also be permitted to use your images to promote Australia Day.
Q: How long after I submit my images will they become viewable within the Image Gallery?
A: Approved images will be viewable in the Image Gallery within 48 hours.
Q: What if my image does not appear on the website gallery after 48 hours?
A: This means that your image has not been accepted by ADCNSW.
Q: Can I edit my image details after submitting my entry?
A: No. Once you have submitted your entry you will no longer be able to edit any of your details on your entry form. Please fill in the detail section carefully and review before submitting.
You will be able to change your contact details as part of your AUSSIEVAULT website registration.
Q: Is my privacy protected?
A: Yes. Your personal details will not be released to any third parties outside ADCNSW and Australia Day sponsors involved in the competition. Email and contact details will not be viewable on the website to the public. The ADCNSW may contact you in regards to media requests and other opportunities. Your name and state will be displayed with the image you upload.
Q: Does it cost anything to enter?
A: No. It does not cost anything for you enter the Living Australian Online Photography Competition. But you could win a great prize and be part of Aussie history.
