In 2001 we rented a flat in Amherst Street in Cammeray, very near the Miller Street shops. A few weeks later I went to Studio 500 and Body Essentials in Cammeray to have my hair and some beauty treatments done. I was hooked and eleven years on I still look forward to my pampering time every six weeks.
In 2006 we bought a house in Chandos Street, Crows Nest; almost an equidistant walk to the shops in Crows Nest and those in Cammeray. Three years later we married and I gave birth to twin daughters; our lives were turned upside down! My husband used our car for work, so for the first 15 months of our daughters' lives, I had to walk everywhere. That's when I really started to meet local people and get to know the area well. I couldn't walk very far without someone stopping me to admire my babies.
One of our favourite stops became Patissons at Stockland Cammeray. I have been stopping for a quick cup of tea while my babies were asleep since it opened.
We have no family in Australia, but we have lots of friends and our girls have spent their short lives being surrounded by people in the local community whom they look forward to seeing. They know the ladies in Harris Farm who give them stickers, the men in Hudsons Meats who give them stamps, Anthony in Cammeray Pharmacy whose toys they play with and best of all the Jane, Olive and Purple at Patissons who cuddle and kiss them and even share their own lunch with them.
They say it takes a village to raise a child. Mine is in Cammeray.
