This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago in our backyard. With high level water restrictions imposed for such a long time, my five year old had never, ever played with a hose. With sweltering temperatures this day, and considering that we never use any water outdoors, we let the kids loose with the hose for fifteen minutes of fun. They filled the paddling pool and went to town! To think of such simple pleasures that we as children took for granted, being unknown to my children, is unthinkable! Pure, simple, clean joy!
The Judges
Angelo Frangopoulos: "It captures so much about being Australian.. mateship, family, having a go, the backyard (which are getting smaller!) and our love of (precious) water. I loved it and I think it will inspire others about what our future holds as a nation … the principles of being Australian are embodied in the next generation."
Brendan Read: "This image to me just captures all things Australian. A simple game with an undersized pool in a undersized backyard. Both girls and boys at play on equal terms, the token redhead boy with a freckly face the image forces you into their lives and their surroundings. Even the fact that the image is a bit on the light side to me adds to it’s simplicity. It really is a moment in time, an Australian moment."
