Australians are a nation of coastal huggers an estimated 80% live within 3kms
We love our sand, surf and sun for many the 3 S` are as important as the 3 R`s
It`s hard to imagine that just over 100 years ago it was against the law to publicly swim in the ocean during the daytime, today it is taken for granted and enjoyed everyday
For some Australians it`s never too cold for Speedo`s espicially in the winter months they risk hyperthermia, frown upon wearing wetsuits, these summer bronzed aussies and sheilas meet and swim in ocean rockpools, their motto is simple : just dive in, swim fast, take a colder shower after, enjoy a post-race drink
They pursue mateship, health and longevity, the racing is often less important than the social activities, all ages are welcome
Around 140 of these ocean rockpools exist in NSW many built by unemployed labour in the 1920`s and 30`s to ease tough times, but today these could be considered some of the most spectacular sporting venues in Australia
